What's the best way to buy a diamond?
How should you go about making your diamond selection?
First, learn as much as you can about diamonds, through websites and other sources. Decide which of the 5C's are most important to you: Cut, Clarity, Color, Carat or Cost. When we show people two stones with similar properties, one a bit smaller with a better cut and the other a bit bigger, but not as good a cut, they will usually prefer the better cut. At Thomas S. Fox Diamond Jewelers, we can help you sort out the differences and make your best diamond choice.
Find out the market price for your diamond. You can compare prices of diamonds, but remember that only similar diamonds can be compared with each other. Even a slight change in grading and weight can increase or decrease the price. Certified and non-certified diamonds are also priced differently.
Ask for a certificate. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is well recognized. A GIA gemologist can provide appraisals as well as certificates. The European Gemological Laboratory (EGL) is recognized non-GIA laboratory. Beware of fake, no-name, or no brand certification; you might get less than you expect. At Thomas S. Fox Diamond Jewelers, you need not worry. We are highly trained and experienced in diamond selection, and every Thomas S. Fox diamond comes with proper certification to prove its high quality and authenticity.
Look for matching Color and Clarities based on your preferences. In other words, don't buy a High Color/Low Clarity or High Clarity/Low Color diamond. Some questions arise immediately. Why pay a premium for an Ideal Cut Diamond, and then accept a lower color and clarity? Or pay a serious premium for an E color diamond with an SI2 clarity? Why not revert instead to a lower color shade and increase one or two clarities?
Finally, ask plenty of questions and enable yourself to make better choices.
